NYS Certified Gestalt Therapist
Since receiving a New York State Board of Regents charter in 1977, the Gestalt Center of Long Island is authorized to grant Certificates of Completion to trainees who complete the 3 Year Certificate Training Program. New York State recognizes all GCLI graduates as certified Gestalt Therapists.
CEU Credits
The Center offers CEU credits for NASW and NCC members, as well as verification of attendance for in-service training, courses give at the Center and independent study programs.
Supervision for NYS Licensure In 2006, NYS Department of Licensing began the credentialing and licensing of health professionals providing psychotherapy services in private and public settings.
The initial step was to “grandparent” practicing psychotherapists who met particular supervision and educational requirements. Many of our graduates applied to be “grandparented” and ultimately licensed, requesting that their work at GCLI be considered toward all, or part of, these requirements. NYS accepted GCLI contact hours to fulfill supervision and educational requirements, and all of these graduates were granted a NYS license.
With this acceptance as precedent, it is our expectation that trainees will be able to use some part of their training to fulfill supervision and possibly education hours needed for licensing.
New York State’s future requirements are presently undecided and we are hopeful that GCLI hours will continue to be applied toward licensure.
The probable next step in the NYS Licensing of health professionals will be the licensing of post-graduate training institutes.
In 1977, GCLI received a NYS Board of Regents provisional charter, allowing us to train excellent Gestalt therapists for more than 29 years.
NYS has not yet indicated their readiness to initiate this licensing process. It is our expectation, given we have been chartered by the same department (NYS Department of Education), that we will be licensed.
